Bedford Train Collision (June 19, 2026): Two East Midlands Railway Passenger Trains Crash Near London

A major rail incident occurred on Friday evening, June 19, 2026, when two passenger trains operated by East Midlands Railway collided south of Bedford in Bedfordshire, England, near the Elstow interchange (roughly a couple of miles south of Bedford, north of London).

What Happened

One train (a Corby-to-London service) struck the rear of a stationary Nottingham-to-London train that had stopped due to a technical fault. The collision involved a Class 360 and a newer Class 810 electric multiple unit. It has been described by passengers as feeling “like a bomb explosion,” with reports of chaos inside the carriages, including scattered seats, injuries such as broken legs, and jammed doors that complicated evacuation.

Emergency services declared a major incident, with a large response including firefighters, police, East of England Ambulance Service, and multiple air ambulances (reports mention up to five). British Transport Police and rail authorities are investigating.

Casualties

•  One fatality: Believed to be a train driver.

•  Multiple injuries: 11 people with very serious injuries, 22 seriously injured and 56 with minor injuries

Impact and Response

•  Rail lines between Luton and Bedford (including Thameslink services) are blocked, causing widespread disruptions.

•  UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern, and officials have thanked emergency responders.

•  Investigations are ongoing into the cause, with focus on the technical fault and signaling/operations.
